Pepsi is giving away millions this
March to fund great ideas as part a new REFRESH EVERYTHING campaign – and Balboa
Park is in the running! Balboa Park was selected as one of the 1,000 finalists
for a $250,000 Pepsi grant to translate 15 park websites into Spanish. Voting
launched today, March 1, 2010
http://pep.si/aNGC9N
and lasts through March 31, 2010. The
top two projects with the most votes at the end of the month win $250,000 in
funding for their proposed project.
"Multilingual content is a top priority for all of the
online properties in Balboa Park, because it translates directly into greater
access and greater engagement,” says Balboa Park Online Collaborative Director
(BPOC), Rich Cherry. “But we need everyone to vote to get this project off the
ground. A collaborative effort by everyone in San Diego and everyone who’s ever
enjoyed Balboa Park will get this idea in motion.”
Balboa Park receives approximately 10 Million visitors every
year, and up to 52% of are Spanish speakers (based on a 2006 survey by Morey
Group). Yet only a handful of the 85 institutions within the park have Spanish
Language content available to the public online.
The Pepsi Refresh grant money would allow BPOC to hire four
full-time English-to-Spanish translators to translate existing website content
into Spanish at 15 Balboa Park museums, plus a Spanish-language blogger to
create new content for the park’s main portal www.balboapark.org.
Get out the vote!
